Known South Indian film star Srikanth, aged 46, was arrested on Monday by the Greater Chennai Police in a high-profile drugs case. The actor involved in more than 54 films released in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema in the different film industries was arrested after arresting T Prasad, an IT wing worker in the AIADMK party, for supplying banned substances.

At the time when they were interrogating Prasad, some important details came to light that connected Srikanth with the illegal drug network. On this evidence, the actor was summoned to the Nungambakkam Police Station and questioned by the police for over nine hours. By the statutory procedure, Srikanth was medically examined in Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. It was confirmed that he had narcotics in his system when a blood test was conducted.

Afterward, Srikanth was remanded before Magistrate Dhayalan of the 14th Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Egmore. Late on Monday night, the hearing was held at the residence of the Magistrate in the Judicial Officers’ Quarters. Through the advocate Vignesh Ramanadhan, the actor was sent to judicial custody up to July 7, 2025.

Srikanth debuted as an actor in the television serial Jannal – Marabu Kavithaigal, under the direction of K. Balachander in 1999, and next struck popularity in his Tamil film debut Roja Kootam in 2002. His arrest has rocked the cinema world as well as his fans.

This is a result of the increased crackdown on drug abuse in the South Indian entertainment scene. Last year alone, Malayalam superstar Shine Tom Chacko and Sreenath Bhasi were called in by the excise department to be interrogated over a drug-related case, after a woman had alleged that she had taken a drug with them. The storyline reveals that there has been a continuous quest by the authorities to combat the drug problem among members of the film fraternity.
