Bishnupur: Violent protests and clashes erupted in Manipur’s capital on Saturday evening, leading to the suspension of internet and mobile data services in the valley districts. In response, authorities have imposed a curfew in Bishnupur district and issued prohibitory orders preventing groups of five or more people from gathering in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching.

At around 2 am on Sunday, Manipur police issued prohibitory orders on X and requested citizens to follow them.

The order related to suspension of internet services for five days issued by Commissioner and Home Secretary of Manipur said – “In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur especially in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching & Bishnupur districts of Manipur, there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the State of Manipur.”

Fresh protests erupted in Imphal valley after five volunteers from the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, including a commander, were reportedly arrested. An irate mob stormed the Kwakeithel Police Outpost in Imphal West, demanding their immediate release. Security forces fired rounds to disperse the crowd, injuring at least three people, including two journalists. Protesters also clashed with security forces in multiple locations.
