NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced that he has accepted an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend the upcoming G7 Summit. The prestigious international gathering is scheduled to take place in Kananaskis, Canada, later this month.

Prime Minister Modi made the announcement on Friday, confirming that he had a telephonic conversation with his Canadian counterpart, during which the invitation was extended. While the precise details of their discussion were not immediately released, the focus of the call was clearly on enhancing bilateral ties and multilateral cooperation.

This invitation underscores India’s growing stature on the global stage and its increasing engagement with leading industrialized nations. Although India is not a member of the G7 (which comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, plus the European Union), it has frequently been invited as a guest nation to G7 and G7+ summits to discuss critical global issues.

PM Modi’s participation in the Kananaskis summit is expected to provide an important platform for India to articulate its perspectives on pressing international challenges, including climate change, economic stability, global health, and geopolitical security. It also offers an opportunity for bilateral meetings with other G7 leaders, further strengthening India’s diplomatic relationships.

The invitation from Prime Minister Carney signals Canada’s recognition of India’s significant role in shaping global discourse and finding solutions to shared problems. This upcoming summit will be a key event for India’s foreign policy, allowing PM Modi to engage with world leaders on issues of mutual interest and contribute to collective global decision-making.
