Raipur: What many are calling the greatest defeat for the Naxal movement in Chhattisgarh, security forces have destroyed the top Maoists and their General Secretary, Basavaraju, by killing 27 of them. The operation was carried out in the thick forests of Abujhmad which cover Narayanpur, Bijapur and Dantewada districts. CM Sai also reacted on this action against the Maoists.
Credible news that high-ranking Maoists were in the region prompted the DRG to lead the mission against the Naxal threat. The DRG sent in teams on May 19 and these teams came together for a major confrontation on May 21. According to reports, Maoist forces started the shooting which led to the security forces reacting quickly and firmly.
Vishnu Deo Sai, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, praised the bravery of DRG officers, saying that killing Basavaraju was a key setback for Maoist rebels. We have carried out regular and effective efforts to fight Naxalism since our government began. Their victory over the General Secretary is a huge success for them. It has crippled how their movement was organized, he said. He praised the courage and the sacrifices made by the security forces protecting the country.
At the encounter site, security officials discovered a huge stash of advanced weapons such as AK-47s, SLRs, INSAS rifles, carbines and large rounds of ammunition.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of one DRG jawan, whose body was returned to Narayanpur after the operation. A number of people besides the suspect were also injured but have now been stabilized with timely help from medical staff.
