Bengaluru: Incessant and torrential rainfall has brought life to a standstill in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, triggering widespread waterlogging and flooding across the city’s road network. The relentless downpour of 100 mm in last 24 hours has severely disrupted the daily lives of residents, making commuting a perilous and time-consuming ordeal. Major thoroughfares have been submerged, leading to traffic snarls and leaving many areas virtually inaccessible. Over 100 houses were affected in Kangeri’s Kote layout.

The office of the Central Crime Branch located in Shantinagar, was also inundated. Water entered the ground floor of the CCB office and there was knee-level stagnation, damaging documents, computers, and other items. The office had only recently shifted from the Chamarajpet CCB headquarters to the new location owing to structural issues.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and several other regions across Karnataka, indicating the likelihood of continued heavy rainfall. The forecast for Tuesday predicts a partly cloudy sky with further possibilities of heavy rain or thunderstorms. This grim weather outlook has heightened concerns among residents already struggling with the aftermath of the current deluge.

Bengaluru deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said that 70 per cent of the 210 identified flood-prone areas have been fixed. “We had identified 210 flood-prone areas in the city. Since taking charge as Bengaluru Development Minister, we have resolved issues in 166 of those locations. Work is in progress in 24 areas, and action will soon begin in the remaining 20,” he was quoted as saying

The persistent rainfall has overwhelmed the city’s drainage infrastructure, leading to the overflowing of lakes and drains. Low-lying areas have been particularly affected, with reports of water entering homes and commercial establishments. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city’s civic body, is reportedly working to address the waterlogging issues, but the sheer volume of rainfall has posed a significant challenge.

The IMD has indicated that the minimum temperature in Bengaluru is expected to settle around 20 degrees Celsius, while the maximum will likely hover around a relatively cool 27 degrees Celsius, further emphasizing the overcast and wet conditions prevailing in the city. Residents are advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated on weather advisories as the city braces for another day of potential heavy rainfall. The economic impact of the disruption, including losses for businesses and daily wage earners, is also a growing concern.
