The Telangana Police have achieved a notable success in their ongoing efforts to counter left-wing extremism with the apprehension of 20 members of the outlawed Maoist Communist Party of India (CPI-Maoist) in the Mulugu district. This operation marks a significant step in the endeavor to diminish the influence of Maoist insurgents in the crucial Telangana-Chhattisgarh border region, an area historically plagued by their activities. The timing of these arrests, between May 16 and 17, suggests a well-coordinated effort to capitalize on the momentum generated by the recently concluded Operation Black Forest.
These arrests followed closely after the successful ‘Operation Black Forest,’ a 21-day campaign aimed at dismantling Maoist strongholds along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border. This earlier operation had already resulted in the elimination of 31 Maoists and the recovery of a large quantity of explosives and firearms. The current arrests appear to be a continuation of these efforts, targeting Maoists who were possibly fleeing the Karregutta forest region following the initial operation.
The police action involved vehicle checks, search operations, and patrolling across various police station jurisdictions within the Mulugu district, specifically targeting the Venkatpuram, Wajedu, and Kannagudem areas. Among those apprehended were key figures within the Maoist hierarchy, including one Divisional Committee Member (DVCM), five Area Committee Members (ACM), and 14 party members. The capture of these individuals, particularly the leadership elements, is a substantial blow to the organizational capabilities of the CPI-Maoist in this region.
Furthermore, authorities recovered a significant cache of weapons, underscoring the armed nature of this group. The seized arsenal included three 5.56mm INSAS rifles, four 7.62mm SLR rifles, one.303 rifle, and four 8mm rifles. In addition to these firearms, the police also confiscated two live grenades, numerous magazines, 16 cartridges for 12-bore weapons, and 180 live rounds. The recovery of such a substantial quantity of arms and ammunition directly impacts the Maoists’ ability to conduct violent activities.
