Brooklyn: A Mexican Navy tall sailing ship, identified as the ARM Cuauhtémoc, struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on Saturday night, May 17, 2025, at approximately 8:26 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The incident occurred as the vessel was departing New York Harbor following a goodwill visit that had lasted from May 13th to May 17th, during which it was docked at South Street Seaport. Eyewitness accounts and video footage quickly circulated on social media, showing the ship’s masts colliding with the underside of the iconic bridge.
The collision resulted in significant damage to the ship’s masts, with reports indicating they snapped and partially collapsed upon impact. The ARM Cuauhtémoc, a three-masted barque, had 277 people on board at the time of the incident. Initial information suggested around 200 occupants , but this figure was later updated. There were also accounts of sailors being in the rigging when the collision occurred.
Emergency responders, including units from the FDNY, NYPD Harbor Unit, and the United States Coast Guard, were dispatched to the scene immediately. While a search and rescue operation was underway in the immediate aftermath , authorities later confirmed that no individuals had fallen into the water. Reports indicate that between 19 and 22 people sustained injuries, with several listed in serious or critical condition. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
