Doha: Neeraj Chopra breaks his national record on a warm Friday evening in Doha. His long locks held back by the trademark headband, world champion Neeraj Chopra broke the barrier that had been weighing him down for a long time, logging a memorable 90.23m throw at Doha Diamond League.

Neeraj is one of two Indians to take part in the Javelin Throw competition alongside Kishore Jena, who had rose to fame with a silver medal in the 2023 Hangzhou Asian games.

Neeraj Chopra created history when he became the first Indian and 25th person to hit a throw of 90,. He hit 90.23m in his third attempt. However, that was not enough as Germany’s Julian Weber as he hit a 91.06m throw to overtake Neeraj and win the Doha Diamond League.

Germany’s Julian Weber stole the top prize with his last throw (91.06m), for the night was truly about an exceptional athlete silencing lingering demons in his head. Grenada’s Anderson Peters was third with a throw of 85.64m.

The competition will see an extremely strong field with 11 athletes taking part. Neeraj will compete against the best javelin throwers in the world as Anderson Peters, Jakub Vadlech, Julian Weber, Leshorn Walcott, Oliver Helander, Roderick Genki Dean, Max Dehning, and Ahmed Sameh Mohamed Hussein are also taking part.

In 2024, Neeraj Chopra missed out on winning the title in the Diamond League final held in Brussels, Belgium. He finished second. The winner was decided by just 1 centimeter. Neeraj finished second and his dream of lifting this trophy for the second time was shattered. In the final played on the night of 14 September, Neeraj threw the javelin 87.86 meters in the third attempt. But Anderson Peters of Grenada won the title with 87.87 meters in the first attempt. Neeraj was just 1 centimeter behind him.

Neeraj will kickstart the 2025 season with the hope of winning his second Diamond League title. However, he will be aiming to kickstart preparation for the 2025 World Championships as he aims to defend his prestigious title after securing gold in 2023. This year’s edition will take place from September 13 to 21 at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, the site of Neeraj’s historic Olympic gold in 2021.
