The G7 countries condemned the fatal terrorist attack in Pahalgam that had occurred on April 22, strongly on Friday, calling on both the governments of India and Pakistan to show maximum restraint and not further escalate the situation. The foreign ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the High Representative of the European Union, in their joint statement, said the maintenance of peace and stability was critical in the South Asian region.

“We, the G7 Foreign Ministers, condemn strongly the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and call for maximum restraint on both sides – India and Pakistan,” said the statement. The group has complained a lot after the deteriorating relations between the two neighboring nuclear-armed countries and has emphasized the need for de-escalation.

The G7 spoke of the urgent need for diplomatic endeavours between India and Pakistan, and urged both parties to engage in direct dialogue that would help solve the disagreements amicably. They warned that a further military escalation could threaten regional stability and represent a serious threat to both civilian populations on either side of the border.

Tensions have ratcheted up high since India staged precise air strikes against terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7. The Indian action was a revenge for the April 22 Pahalgam attack, in which 26 civilians lost their lives after being attacked by Pakistan-backed terrorists.

From its G7 statement, the government reaffirmed continued monitoring of the situation and renewed its support for a “quick and lasting diplomatic solution” to prevent things from going any further. These calls for calm and dialogue are made in a gravity of situation, as the talks increase over the possibility of further military confrontations and their humanitarian fallout.
