In a brave twist of fortunes, one of the two accused in the Amritsar temple grenade attack case was shot dead in a Punjab Police encounter at Rajasansi area on Monday morning, while the other escaped. The police had tracked Gursidak and Vishal, but when they were being arrested, the attempt took the form of a fierce gunfight.

Police sources said it was a one-sided encounter, when SHO Chheharta and his team tried to stop them while they were fleeing a place on a motorcycle. Both accused took to abandoning the motorcycle when intercepted and fired upon the police personnel. Head Constable Gurpreet Singh, in his bullet wound arm, while another bullet grazed the turban of Inspector Amolak Singh, was injured in exchange of gunfire. The police vehicle, which was hit in a shot, was the second to be shot.

When Inspector Vinod Kumar fired from his pistol in self defense, he injured Gursidak. Soon after the police caught him on the spot and immediately rushed him to the civil hospital for treatment. Nevertheless, he died of his wounds. The second accused, Vishal, managed to flee (as a result of which police had to launch an extensive manhunt to find him).

FIR has been registered by the police at an airport police station in connection with the incident. Today, the injured police officer is being treated.

They are now redoubling efforts to bring the fugitive suspect into custody and to learn whether the charged man had ties to a bigger network involved in the temple attack. Measures to prevent further incidents have been taken up in the security in Amritsar.
