Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday that China stands firm in its commitment to enhancing bonds with India and that the two sides have to look forward to a stable and cooperative future by continuing to learn from the past. On Friday, speaking at a press conference, Wang Yi said that 2024 will be the 75th anniversary of Chinese Indian diplomatic relations, and China would cooperate with India for mutual growth and development.
However, on relations between the two Asian giants, Wang Yi said there has been good progress over the past year. But he remembered the vital meeting held between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the margins of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2023. He said the meeting was strategic in giving direction for how they can improve and strengthen bilateral ties. On concrete steps of both nations to realize the leaders’ shared vision by means of exchanges and practical cooperation in various areas, both reaching a series of positive outcomes, he wrote.
Wang described India and China as ‘each other’s largest neighbours’, adding that it was the correct path for cooperation, not competition. Nominating the partnership between the two countries as a ‘cooperative pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant’, he came out in favor of a collaborative approach. He stressed this is what makes it the only logical and beneficial choice for both nations.
Wang Yi also underscored the joint responsibility on the part of India and China to speed up economic development and national revitalization. According to him, both countries have enough reasons to spur support and facilitate each other’s growth. Such remarks hinted at China’s interest in improving its relationship with India in the hope of a more stable and cooperative regional environment.
