Two flights carrying 33 undocumented Indian migrants who were deported from the United States landed Monday at the Ahmedabad Airport from Amritsar. Arriving around 12 noon, the first group consisted of three deportees: two from Mehsana and one from Gandhinagar. According to SG Khambhla, Inspector at the Ahmedabad Airport Police Station, a second flight with 30 additional deportees landed late in the afternoon.

Shortly after leaving the airport, police vehicles started transporting the deportees, including several children, straight to their hometowns in Gujarat. The people were safe, said Inspector Khambhla; as soon as they reached the airport, they were transported by police to their native places. The authorities have provided a safe transit arrangement for deportees to their homes across the state.

The 33 migrants arriving here are part of a total of 74 whom Gujarat has deported since the first deportation flight arrived on February 6. These migrants are part of the third batch of illegal Indian immigrants sent back to India by the US government under the administration of former President Donald Trump.

It is also a point of contention on the deportation of undocumented immigrants, especially because of the legal, social, and economic implications of both the deported and the families that will be left behind. But those being deported reportedly would be in the US for long stretches of time left up in the air; some even overstayed their visas or were not legal when entering the country.

This is a continuation of the previous administration’s play to crack down on illegal immigration with their US deportation campaign. These migrants returning to India have been watched closely by the Indian government.
