Notably, the Assam Police on Monday filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Pakistani national Ali Tauqueer Sheikh and the rest of the unidentified persons for carrying out anti-India activities. The Assam Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had directed to investigate Sheikh allegedly linked with and to gauge its implications on nationalism and sovereignty.

Amongst the charges of FIR filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), there are several. It includes abetment of acts alleged to be offences in India, adultery with the wife of a foreign government employee, endangering the national sovereignty of India, criminal conspiracy, and unlawful activities. Under BNS 2023 Sections 48, 152, 61, 197(1), along with Section 13(1) of UAPA, it has been registered as CID PS Case No. 05/2025.

The row intensified after allegations linked Sheikh to his fellow Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Clare Gogoi, a British national. Led Pakistan, an NGO set up by Sheikh involved in climate change projects, is questioned by Sarma and several BJP leaders over Elizabeth Gogoi’s past association with the group. They also mentioned that she participated in the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) that is working both in India and Pakistan.

In response, Gaurav Gogoi vigorously denied the allegations, saying it was a ‘slanderous campaign’ and that his family would file legal action. Such development has sparked a political controversy, with the ruling party being accused of trying to defame political opponents by the opposition. Authorities are investigating possible national security implications involved with the alleged contacts.
