India’s workhorse Shubman Gill put in a masterful 112 off 102 balls as India posted a sound base against England in the third and final ODI. After Shreyas Iyer scored an elegant 78 off 64 balls, his stellar innings came. England’s star leg spinner Adil Rashid claimed the wickets of both batters, earlier knocking out Virat Kohli for 52 off 55 balls. But for Rashid’s spell, India would have been on charge, and with KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya at the crease, the hosts have an opportunity to end on a high note with the remaining 10 overs.
In style, Gill reached his seventh ODI century with a four, which brought up the milestone from 95 balls. That, though, is interesting because the young Indian vice-captain has now recorded hundreds in all forms in Ahmedabad, a special venue for him. He has been unusually consistent in this series, having made three successive fifties or better. But Shreyas Iyer continued to complement Gill well as India carried on the momentum after Kohli’s dismissal.
India were made to pay for an early setback in the innings when Rohit Sharma was dismissed for just the single run made by him on the bow of Mark Wood in his second over. But Kohli and Gill combined for an excellent 116-run stand for the second wicket, which outweighed England’s initial advantage. Kohli was in fine touch but was looking to move to his 73rd ODI half-century before Rashid struck.
This will be the first time India and England faced off in an ODI in Ahmedabad, as the hosts have already won the series. England captain Jos Buttler lost the toss for the third time in a row and decided to set Pakistan to bat first. India will be keen to gain winning momentum for their Champions Trophy campaign.
