Time for a strategic partnership on AI and a bilateral roadmap for cooperation on small modular reactors between India and France, says the sources familiar with the matter.

Civil Nuclear, Defence and Space have been enumerated as important areas for cooperation.

During his visit, PM Modi will have high-level talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on civil nuclear collaboration, defence partnerships and space exploration. Several other agreements and announcements are expected, as his main purpose of visiting is to co-chair the AI action summit on February 11.

Defence cooperation will be the one of the main focuses, specifically in combat jets, submarines and jet engines development. Officials said discussions are at an advanced stage and an official announcement on defence partnerships cannot be ruled down.

AI Roadmap and the 2026 Year of Innovation

The bilateral India France meeting has finalized around 10 agreements ranging from a comprehensive declaration on AI cooperation. This AI roadmap is crucial for the 2026 Year of Innovation, a joint project whereby the two countries would work to promote technological advancements, and collaborative projects.

The focus will be on four key sectors within the Year of Innovation:

  1. Aerospace and Defence – Strengthening cooperation in aviation, space exploration, and security.
  2. Green and Blue Economies – Advancing smart cities, sustainable energy solutions, and marine conservation.
  3. Healthcare and Food Security – AI and biotech for medical research and agriculture.
  4. Cultural and Industrial Partnerships – Encouraging collaboration in arts, education, and technological industries.
