EAM S Jaishankar addressed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday on the issue of deporting Indian nationals from the United States. He stressed that it is the duty of every country to repatriate its citizens whom it has found to have illegitimately settled abroad.

This should be a matter of concern for all the countries and if found in a foreign country, people must be repatriated to their respective countries, Jaishankar reiterated that India is handling such situation responsibly.

Moreover, he assured the parliament that the Indian government is proactively dealing with US authorities and urging them to treat deported Indian nationals with dignity and not subject them to any form of mistreatment. He also urged a serious crackdown on the illegal immigration business, the accomplices of which facilitate such unauthorized migration.

“We are in constant touch with the US government to ensure that our Indian deportees are not treated in any manner. But what the House has to also understand is that our fundamental impulse should be in taking very strong action against those who exploit people by offering them false hope of becoming employed overseas,” Jaishankar said.

Deportees have highlighted the need for strict legal action and minister has further indicated that law enforcement agencies shall take such action as per the information given by the deportees. These would be in place to prevent cases that would occur in future and make those who are involved in the human trafficking and illegal migration to be made responsible for their actions.

He said that our agencies will act based on the information coming from deportees, and steps will be taken against those who are providing facilities for facilitating illegal immigration, and harsh action will be taken against these agencies and agents as well.

Jaishankar’s comments reflect India’s push and pull to keep its nationals abroad safe while tackling the reasons behind immigration without sanction.
