On its opening Tuesday (January 21), Kangana Ranaut’s ambitious movie Emergency saw a decline in box office collection. According to estimates, the film, which debuted in theaters on January 17, made Rs 1 crore on Day 5.

With this, Emergency has collected a total of Rs 12.40 crore. According to the data, the movie’s occupancy rate in the Hindi market was 0.79 percent. Film Emergency, directed and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut, revolves around the darkest chapters of Indian history after independence. The film is set during the 21 months between 1975 and 1977 when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency across the country.

In Emergency, Anupam Kher plays the role of Jayaprakash Narayan while Kangana Ranaut plays the lead role. Milind Soman remains Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Shreyas Talpade has been introduced as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mahima Choudhary as Pupul Jayakar, and Visakh Nair as Sanjay Gandhi.

Kangana Ranaut praised fans for their love and support for Emergency in a recent Instagram video. However, she expressed her sadness about the film not releasing in Punjab owing to state-wide protests. In the clip, Kangana Ranaut said, “Mere dil mein abhi bhi kuch dard hai. Punjab. Industry mein aesa kaha jata tha ki Punjab mein meri filmein sabse acha perform karti hai. Aur aaj ek din hai jab Punjab mein meri film ko release tak nahi hone diya jaraha hai (I still have pain in my heart. Punjab. It was said in the industry that my films perform the best in Punjab. And today, my film isn’t even being allowed to release there).”

Banning the screening of the film Emergency in many parts of Punjab, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Harjinder Singh Dhami demanded a ban on it. SGPC also wrote a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann regarding this film. Cinema theaters in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bhatinda, and Patiala refused to show the film following continuous SGPC protests.
