As Delhi gets ready for Assembly polls on February 5, citizens of the capital are agitating about many issues that the next government needs to address. They include for example, deteriorating road network conditions, poor water quality, and pollution levels, which are emerging as major concerns by the communities.
This is evident from the remarks of a man named Mohammad Sadiq, also from Seelampur in northeast Delhi, who complained about the issue, stating thus; “We have lighting today but our water source is very contaminated. For drinking and cooking purposes, we have no option but to purchase clean water that goes for between ₹30 and ₹50 per day,” he said. He was also raising the voice that there is a new problem of bad roads in his area and such problems should be given priority by the incoming government.
Likewise, speaking to me from Hardevpuri in northeast Delhi, the 55-year-old Harsh Tyagi also expressed concerns regarding several ongoing predicaments. He pointed towards the narrow streets, no place for car parking, and insufficient tree cover in his area. “Essentially, due to a scarcity of trees in our locality the amount of pollution that is present within the area is high. The existing narrow lanes develop a problem of parking space congestion, and also there is no mechanism for drainages,” commented Tyagi. He said there is a need to improve on these sectors, particularly with regard to increasing environmental problems.
For instance, in the northwest region of Delhi, one of the major concerns raised were poorly done roads and wandering cattle. “The basic amenities, like electricity, clean water, and water supply are available but the roads are very bad every where there are some potholes. While the inter and intra-city link roads are well developed, the Wazirpur Industrial Area inner roads are in bad condition. However, strayed cattle are also a big problem, and someone gets trapped and cannot move in any way in the area,” according to Sharma, who called on authorities to deal with such issues.
As people gripe, it appears that the forthcoming Delhi Assembly elections will be an issue-based affair.
