External Affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will be on six-day visit to the United States from Tuesday, the Ministry of external affairs said on Monday. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Jaishankar will hold discussions with counterparts on vital bilateral, regional, and global matters. He is also scheduled to chair a conference of India’s Consul Generals in the US, the MEA added.
“External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar will visit the United States of America from 24-29 December, 2024. He will be meeting counterparts to discuss key bilateral, regional and global issues. During the visit, EAM will also chair a conference of the Consul Generals of India in the USA,” the MEA said in a statement.
While speaking at the media event, Jaishankar had said the outcome of US elections reflected the American electorate’s growing dissatisfaction with the effects of globalisation.
The minister added that the US will “become more self-aware under the Donald Trump administration regarding its economic and manufacturing interests, as the nature of technology is linked to national security.”
In another development, US ambassador to India Eric Garcetti on December 19 highlighted the potential of the India-US partnership.
Donald Trump On India Imposing Tariff
Earlier on 18 December, US President-elect Donald Trump has stated his plan to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries, including India, that levy high duties on American goods. Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump criticized India’s tariff practices, specifically highlighting the 100% tariffs on certain US products.
He made it clear that his administration would adopt a tit-for-tat approach, saying, “If they tax us, we tax them the same amount.” Trump’s remarks signal a more confrontational trade stance towards India, a country he singled out alongside others like Brazil for imposing what he described as “high tariffs” on US imports.
