A ‘jatha’ (group) of farmers from Punjab under the banner of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha plans to march from the Shambhu border to the Parliament in Delhi on Friday, December 6. Their demands are a legal guarantee for the minimum support price for crops, no hikes in electricity tariffs, a debt waiver, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, and justice for the victims of violence in Lakhimpur Kheri in 2021 and during the farmers’ protests in 2020-21.
After suspending the Delhi Chalo march for the day, farmer leader Sarvan Singh Pandher announces farmers will make another attempt to march peacefully on Sunday.
“I think the Prime Minister is not even listening to the Vice President. If the round of talks had started, a happy solution to this movement could have been found. The government is not ready for talks. For us the ruling party and the opposition are the same, they all do politics,” says Sarwan Singh Pandher.
What are the arrangements? The Haryana police have added three layers of barricading towards the Punjab side. A wire mesh and traffic barricades with wheels were added and a tent was erected. The seven-layer barricading includes a wall, iron nails, barbed wires, etc. Meanwhile, the Punjab police have also increased their strength towards the Shambhu border as the crowd there has been growing.
On farmers’ protest at Shambhu border, Haryana Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana said, “Farmers from Punjab have been protesting at Shambhu border for a long time now. In our state, crops are being purchased on MSP. No govt at the Centre has done as much for farmers as our govt (NDA govt) has done…During the Congress regime, farmers suffered losses. After the BJP came to power, the condition of farmers improved…The way Haryana CM is helping the state’s farmers, Punjab CM should also its farmers to resolve their issues.”
