Keeping up with the events unfolding within the India-China relationship following the border disengagement agreement, India External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is to present a briefing to the Lok Sabha on Monday. This statement comes as the Parliament’s Winter Session began their first week with lots of protests even on their first day of the session. The session commenced on 25th November and is to end on 20th December.
Of the 16 bills that are on the anvil for the Parliament session, the Waqf Amendment Bill is likely to be a major item on the list. The waqf bill, which proposes changes in laws relating to the management of waqf property, has been included for consideration and possible enactment after a parliamentary joint committee of both Houses has considered it and submitted its report to the Lok Sabha.
However, the first week of the Winter Session has remained almost a washout because of continued protests by the opposition parties. These protests were occasioned by charges preferred against businessman Gautam Adani before a US Court where he was charged with bribery. Such demonstrations blocked the work of Parliament, and there could be no question of getting any important work done.
The Congress leader Karti Chidambaram also shared the same opinion and opined “I am very disappointed that the House is not functioning. For the past year, I have been waiting to raise matters concerning my constituencies, this state, and the wonderful people of Indi,a but all this is being denied to me.” He appealed to the government to sweep the mold and allow the opposition to bring motions from time to time and engage the House business.
Further, the Winter Session will go ahead and determine if the two extremes in Indian political governance can cooperate to solve the pertinent problems that the country faces at present, including the bills mentioned above and foreign matters.
