Seven of the deceased were women, and 24 others were injured in the mishap on the Gondia-Arjuni road near Bindravana Tola village when a Maharashtra State Transport Corporation bus rolled over on Friday. According to police, the accident occurred around 12:30 PM. When the driver tried to overtake another vehicle, he was given an overbalance, and the bus landed upside down.
The bus was heading to Gondia in eastern Maharashtra from Bhandara district, about 50 kilometres from the affected area. Regrettably, eight passengers perished on the scene, and three died when taken to hospital. The injured were rushed to the government civil hospital in Gondia to receive primary treatment.
Some pictures assured the viewers that the accident taking place had been very vivid – there were a lot of people around the overturned bus. These were police helmets, cars and vans, ambulances, and cranes to aid in the rescue and giving out of aid. Eyewitnesses said that the driver rushed out of the vehicle after the accident and left the scene.
Till now, they have recognized nine of the deceased as Smita V. Suryavanshi Mangala Rajesh Lanjewar, Rajesh Lanjewar Kalpana Wankhede Ramchandra Kanoje Anjira Kanoje Arifa Azahar Syyed Azahar Ali Sayyed and Nayana Vishal Mitkar.
Maharashtra’s acting Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, also mourned the incident and promised monetary aid worth ₹10 lakh for the survivors’ kin. Chief Minister of Maharashtra also extended his condolences for the loss and said it was unfortunate to lose so many lives. The injured passengers would receive proper medical attention, said Fadnavis and asked the district collector of Gondia to arrange to shift the patients to Nagpur hospitals if required.
The relief operations are at the moment being supervised by the Senior Administrative Officials at the scene of the accident. The government has promised to fully support the affected families and is still ensuring it supervises the situation. This tragic case has again given awareness about the importance of prescribed legal measures of road safety and appropriate attention of the drivers.
