Delhi AQI today: The national capital received no relief from air pollution after Delhi’s air quality slipped to ‘severe category’ on Saturday. The city’s overall AQI in Delhi was recorded at 362 at 8 am on Sunday. A few trains operating from and to Delhi were delayed due to poor visibility. Meanwhile, Mumbai also witnessed severe air pollution this morning. Visuals show Taj Mahal, Red Fort, India Gate, etc, engulfed in thick layer of smog.
Noxious smog smothering the plains of north India is not only choking the lungs of residents and killing millions, but also slowing the country’s economic growth. Mumbai’s air pollution also reached high levels on Saturday and remained high Sunday morning. Areas like Navi Mumbai, Bandra, etc., woke up to a foggy morning today.
In Uttar Pradesh, IMD has issued smog warning.
India’s capital New Delhi frequently ranks among the world’s most polluted cities. Each winter, vehicle and factory emissions couple with farm fires from surrounding states to blanket the city in a dystopian haze. Delhi’s air quality remained severe throughout Saturday, with the AQI at 412. The maximum temperature in the city stood at 29.4 degrees Celsius.
Acrid smog this month contains more than 50 times the World Health Organization recommended limit of fine particulate matter – dangerous cancer-causing microparticles known as PM2.5 pollutants, that enter the bloodstream through the lungs.
Experts say India’s worsening air pollution is having a ruinous impact on its economy – with one study estimating losses to the tune of US$95 billion annually, or roughly 3 per cent of the country’s GDP.
