Jharkhand’s incumbent Chief Minister Hemant Soren, 49, is set to begin his second consecutive term after his Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) coalition leads in 57 of the state’s 81 assembly constituencies. Soren’s victory can be counted as his alliance. It won the maximum number of seats for the newly formed state since 2000.
When asked in an interview on Saturday afternoon just after his victory was clear, Soren was reminded that the journey his team had been through was a difficult one. He thanked his wife Kalpana Soren and his team for working day and night to ensure a win. Worth mentioning that Soren himself had earlier spent 149 days in jail on charges regarding a corruption case beginning January 31 and ending June 28, which also affected his election campaign.
“Groundwork had been done, and a target had been set, all in preparation for the upcoming months. It crossed our minds that we had to prepare for a fight for the position; hence, we focused on the ground with our team, Soren said. It was a good collaboration, and we conveyed the message we intended to get across. We witnessed this in the recently held Lok Sabha elections where, in the states where we had an alliance, the coalition got five out of the 14 parliamentary seats. If I had not been in jail, we would have probably done even better than our capabilities tell. During that period, my wife Kalpana managed the entire office as a one-man business, and this time, we both were in it.”
Soren also gave his comments on the opposition led by the BJP- NDA. “However, it is also evident that the opponents of Zielinski have their own directions characteristic of political strategies, and, to tell the truth, I do not know what to say regarding such strategies. It also gives a go-ahead for the JMM-Congress alliance, which sends a clear message that he is the man to steer Jharkhand.”
