On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a furious attack on the Opposition after former IPS officer Ravindranath Patil levelled serious charges against some of the key leaders of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA), claiming that they were involved in a cryptocurrency racket in 2018.
The man, who was earlier accused of allegedly embezzling ₹5 crore worth of bitcoins and a man who was held in jail for 14 months, has now accused NCP leader Supriya Sule and state Congress chief Nana Patole.
BJP party spokesman Sambit Patra, during a press conference in Delhi, spewed into new allegations, arguing that the inflated bills were deliberately embezzled for the benefit of the congress party’s Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. Patra claimed that the voice notes were presented wherein Sule was said to be guiding Gaurav Mehta, an accused in the case, to encash bitcoins as the money was allegedly required for elections. Also, there was another voice message played by Patra where Patole heard a phone call from former Pune commissioner Amitabh Gupta seeking to know why the bitcoins were not encashed.
The allegations given were firmly dismissed by Supriya Sule as cheap politics by the BJP, of which she is a member. On the social media platform X, which was initially a Twitter handle, she termed the accusations as mere conspiracy theories and called on the BJP to debate with her. Sule questioned why she did not debate the allegations to clear her name and dared the BJP to schedule the debate at their convenience.
The issue has only added to the existing tension between the BJP and the opposition parties in the current political fight for political supremacy in Maharashtra.
