Sriharikotla: Elon Musk’s SpaceX is set to make history by launching India’s GSAT-20 communications satellite. This marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between India’s space agency, ISRO, and the renowned American aerospace company. The GSAT-20 satellite, weighing 4,700 kg, is too heavy for India’s own rockets to carry, so SpaceX was chosen for the launch.
The Falcon 9 rocket, developed by SpaceX, will carry the 4,700 kg satellite into orbit. This launch is particularly noteworthy as it showcases the growing global partnership in space exploration and technology.
The GSAT-20 satellite is designed to provide vital communication services across India, including internet connectivity to remote areas. Its advanced capabilities will play a crucial role in enhancing digital infrastructure and bridging the digital divide. The successful launch of this satellite will not only benefit India but also contribute to the global advancement of space technology.
Previously, ISRO relied on French commercial launch service provider Arianespace for such heavy satellite launches, however, the company does not have any operational rockets at present. Moreover, with no current options from Russia due to the Ukraine conflict, and China being off-limits, SpaceX became the best available option for India.
This collaboration between ISRO and SpaceX signifies a new era of international cooperation in space exploration. It underscores the potential for joint ventures between nations to achieve common goals in space. By combining their expertise and resources, both organizations can push the boundaries of space exploration and unlock new opportunities for scientific discovery and technological innovation.
