Two accused in connection with the Bahraich violence case were shot dead by Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday. The two suspects, named Sarfaraz and Talib, were on the run to the neighbouring country of Nepal when the police arrested them. In the process of their confrontation, both men fired at each other in their bid to shoot their legs to flee. In this case, five people have been arrested. Two among them, Sarfaraz and Talib, fell to the bullets fired by the police. “There is nothing to worry about their condition,” Bahraich Superintendent of Police Vrinda Shukla told a news agency.

The violence in Bahraich began on October 13, soon after a 22-year-old man named Ram Gopal Mishra was shot dead during the Durga idol immersion procession. The forensic doctors confirmed that Mishra had been shot ‘25 to 30 pellets’ according to the Bahraich CMO, Dr Sanjay Kumar. The report further revealed that Mishra had sustained severe injuries around his left eye and toenails; this shows that he was attacked with a lot of force.

After the death of Mishra, further disturbances were reported from the area; protesters torched several more shops and vehicles. The first report about violence was reported on Sunday night at Hardi police station and involved six identifiable persons and four unknown individuals. A total of 11 charges have been made– 2 on 13 October, 2 on 14 October and 7 on 15 October against the attackers.

In order to quell the protest, the district authorities deactivated mobile Internet and broadband connections for three days. These services have since been resumed, but the police have continued to patrol the district, especially within a 20 Km radius of Maharajganj town, where the violence began. The communities have yet to calm down; however, the police are working hard to reopen the stores, arrest the culprits, and solve the problems.
