The Gangavathi police cracked the whip by seizing three luxurious cars, including a Benz, a BMW, and a Jeep Cherokee, which belong to the mining tycoon and MLA Janardhana Reddy. This action comes after a security breach was claimed to have been acted on by the caretaker Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who was in Gangavathi on October 4. As per the police informants, Reddy’s jeep is alleged to have crossed the road divider and ventured into the lane reserved for the Chief Minister, who is too close to it, which can pose a threat of an eventual accidental occurrence.

The police had planned the path through which Siddaramaiah was to pass, and none of the vehicles could obstruct the way. However, Reddy‘s car, in what the authorities termed as reckless advance, got nearer to the convoy at the nick of time before the convoy was due to pass. Leaders highlighted that if things became worse and the car hit the convoy, it could lead to a major and unpleasant accident.

As if to justify the actions of the police, Janardhana Reddy said that he had waited for about half an hour while the convoy of the Chief Minister was passing by. Reddy noted resentment of penalty for what he was of the view as a very important personal issue. He said he was on his way to a family function in Ballari and needed to be there to perform a homam and the ritual known as Poornahuti.

Reddy’s speech also pointed at the opposition between political etiquette and responsibilities. Sphere ministers should take into consideration the impact of their security measures on a common population. He said, “The incumbent of the Chief Minister’s office should not make things hard for the public.” It prompts action on the concerns of road safety, protocols to be followed when transporting political personalities, and the balance between on security detail and chore and personal responsibilities.
