Rain washed out play early on day one of the second Test between India and Bangladesh with Bangladesh 107/3 in 35 overs. These interruptions occurred after only nine overs of play in the second session when the rain came, and the umpires put the batters out of their misery. At the end of the day, Mominul Haque was at 40 off 81 balls, and Mushfiqur Rahim was at 6 off 13 balls. Play was initially suspended because of poor light, and then later, a rain shower was paid for the rest of the day.

Earlier in the second session, Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for 44 to break a crucial 51-run stand with Mominul Haque. This stand had made Bangladesh come to terms with the jolts that Indian pacer Akash Deep had provided in the first hour of his bowling, allowing Bangladesh to reach only 74/2 by lunch.

The match had already been brought forward by an hour to avoid a wet outfield after there was rain during the night in Kanpur. Opting to stay overnight after losing the morning to rain, only occasional showers were expected for most of the day, but delicate drizzles began to sprinkle after the final over of the first session and after the players left for Lunch, the rain started to pour, and covers were brought on.

Deep got the much-needed Indian breakthrough in his very first over and, in the ninth over, sent back Bangladesh opener Zakir Hasan for a duck, zero off 24 balls. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj started the innings with the bowling, and Bumrah bowled three successive overs of maiden. Stand-in captain Ajay Jadeja gave debut to Ashwin for Siraj in the eighth over of the power play and Deep for Bumrah in the ninth.

India, skipper Rohit Sharma had made his decision to bowl first, as in the second game, he retained the unchanged squad with India having achieved a 280-run triumph in Chennai.
