Mumbai: A recent mishap involved a four storey residential building where a balcony came crashing down on Saturday in south Mumbai due to heavy downpour in Maharastra. Grant Road based building was susceptible to the down pour and weak Arches which led to the collapse of a balcony and portions of the second and third floors in addition to the fourth-floor ground.
Targeted building called Rubinnisa Manzil located on Sleater Road near the Grant Road railway station had been deemed dangerous by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) earlier. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) had also given notices with respect to the situation of the building. Nevertheless, the recent heavy downpours ruined the old structure more than before as advised in the warnings.
The accident took place at around 11 in the morning when the balcony and slab collapsed partially, encasing several residents. The fire was promptly reported and attended to by the operations emergency teams, further the fire brigade pulled out 13 people from the building. Regrettably, one woman of about 70 years was declared dead in a local hospital, whereas three others sustained minor injuries and are admitted in hospital.
More so, prior to its collapse a total of ten people were in the building, thus, to date, approximately between seven and eight individuals are said to be trapped inside the partially collapsed structure. As for the civil people, the fire department as well as other emergency services are trying their best to get to the trapped and save them.
At the same time, in the basin of the city of Mumbai and its suburbs, there were frequent heavy rains that caused the flooding of many territories. Barrier constructions were carried out near Sheetal Cinema and Kale Marg, Kurla and on Aarey road, Goregaon East. However, considering the situation, train and flight facility was less disrupted and carried on as usual. IMD has placed a red colour warning for Chandrapur and orange colour warning for Nagpur, Amravati and Wardha districts as the severe weather continues.
