New Delhi: The NEET-UG 2024 case was postponed by the Supreme Court on Thursday due to the fact that some parties had not yet received the most recent affidavits submitted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Center. Due to alleged paper leaks and other irregularities, the matter will now be heard on July 18 at the Supreme Court, further delaying a decision on a number of petitions calling for a re-conduct of NEET-UG 2024.
The hearing was postponed by a bench chaired by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, who also noted that some of the attorneys representing the petitioner candidates had expressed dissatisfaction over not obtaining the affidavits that the Center and NTA had submitted on Wednesday night.
The bench, which also included justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, stated that before proceeding further with the case, the parties would need to review the affidavits and consider the concerns stated in them.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation on June 23, also provided a status report, which the CJI remarked would be taken into consideration at a later date.
The Center opposed the demand for a retest of the NEET-UG 2024 in the affidavit that was submitted on Wednesday night. The Center cited an extensive report from IIT-Madras that disputes claims of widespread malpractices or the distribution of illegal benefits to candidates at specific centres.
The top 140000 ranks for 2023 and 2024 were analyzed by IIT-Madras in order to look for any anomalies. The results of the analysis, which was released on July 10, indicated that there was no evidence of widespread malpractice or of any particular set of candidates who benefited unduly and that the distribution of high marks was consistent among the cities and centres.
