Bhilai: SAIL has a large steel plant located in Bhilai, and today, another major mishap has happened at this plant. This factor has a negative impact on the management of the BSP, and the following consequences were realized. The accident took place at the Universal Rail Mill [URM], a plant that produces the world’s longest rail track. A rail track that was produced by the stamping machine fell and lodged itself in a cabin when it was about fifteen feet off the ground, causing havoc in the plant. The BSP’s fire fighting team was successful in putting off a fire that occurred as a result of a hot rail track that combusted cables.
After the incident, the management of the URM department powered off all the machines they used in the production line. Despite the two-hour vigorous attempt, the rail track placed on the top of the operator’s cabin was unbolted and disassembled into sections. It is rather astounding that such incidents were recorded as having occurred in the Universal Rail Mill (URM). Earlier, a rail track had intruded into the testing room with a likelihood of endangering the employees’ safety. It is said that when the hot red rail track crossed the stamping machine to get into the cabin, then it could have caused some death.
However, this time the blazing rail track bore its heat on the roof of the cabins. This is because when this rail track disappeared from the rolling table in an unexpected manner, it also affected the stamping machine’s motor. Another component which the influence of the rolling table’s motion damaged was the hydraulic system. The rail track escaped the round table, and the hydraulic hose pipe was burnt, apparently, the rolling operations have been stopped at the URM department. Some of the things that were damaged resulted in being burnt; some of them included wires.
The employees left after the accident after realizing that something was wrong. The fire brigade was immediately informed, and both firemen endeavoured to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible. As it is, attempts are still being made to down the rail track. After it has become almost rigid the next day, the rail track will be cut and carried away by a crane.
