The India Meteorological Department (IMD) weather forecast report states that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions is expected in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi until May 23; in Rajasthan over the next three days, and in Uttar Pradesh until May 21.
Besides this, heatwave conditions were also forecasted for Rajasthan till May 21; for Uttar Pradesh over the next three days; for Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh till May 23; for Uttarakhand till May 22; for Bihar and West Bengal on May 20; for Jharkhand till May 21 and for Odisha till May 23.
Despite the heatwave conditions gripping most of northern India, strong surface winds of 25 to 35 kmph are likely to prevail over Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan until May 24.
In Rajasthan, the highest temperature of 46.7 degrees Celsius was recorded in Sriganganagar and Anta, while Nuh was the hottest in Haryana at a blistering high of 47.2 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded a high of 44.2 degrees Celsius.
Faridkot was the hottest in Punjab at 44 degrees Celsius, followed by Amritsar in second place with 43.9 degrees.
Madhya Pradesh’s Datia saw 47.5 degrees, while in Uttar Pradesh, Agra recorded 47.7 degrees and Jhansi recorded 47.2 degrees.
The IMD has expressed concerns in the wake of the blistering heat and urged people in heatwave-affected areas to avoid exposure, wear light-coloured cotton clothes, use hats and umbrellas to cover one’s head.
“There is a very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in people of all ages, and a health concern for vulnerable individuals such as infants, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases,” the weather office said
