New Delhi: In the latest disciplinary action, a minimum of nine Lok Sabha MPs across various parties faced suspension for their alleged ‘unruly conduct’ within the parliamentary chambers. The suspension extends for the remainder of the ongoing winter session. Among the suspended Opposition members are four from the Congress party, two each from the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and one from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M).

The four Congress MPs facing suspension are Benny Behanan, VK Sreekandan, Mohammad Jawed, and Manickam Tagore. Behanan and Sreekandan represent the Chalakudy and Palakkad Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala, respectively. Two CPI MPs from Tamil Nadu, PR Natarajan (Coimbatore) and K Subbarayan (Tiruppur), also received suspensions. Additionally, DMK MPs Kanimozhi Karunanidhi (Thoothukkudi) and SR Parthiban (Salem) from Tamil Nadu, along with S Venkatesan from the CPI(M) representing Madurai, are among those suspended.

This disciplinary action follows the suspension of five MPs earlier in the day for the duration of the winter session, including four from the Congress and one from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The cumulative number of suspended MPs has now reached 15, with 14 from Lok Sabha and one from Rajya Sabha.

These actions come in the aftermath of a security breach at the new Parliament building. The breach involved four individuals, two of whom jumped from the Lok Sabha chamber, releasing yellow-colored gas and causing disruption during MPs’ zero-hour speeches. The other two individuals protested and raised slogans outside the building. The suspension of multiple MPs reflects the parliamentary authorities’ response to maintaining decorum and order in the wake of recent disruptive incidents.
