Raipur: There is only one state forest buffalo of pure blood left in Chhattisgarh, which is old and blind. The Forest Department has been claiming that there are 8 forest buffaloes in Chhattisgarh. Six are in the Udanti Sitanadi enclosure, one is roaming freely in the Udanti Sitanadi forest and one is in a jungle safari, but the letter from the Deputy Director Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve has exposed the forest department.

In fact, the Forest Department has prepared a breeding plan for breeding the five female forest buffaloes brought from Assam with seven male forest buffaloes from Chhattisgarh and has sent it to the Central Zoo Authority. Also sent a list of names of forest buffaloes of Chhattisgarh. In response, the Zoo Authority said that among the names sent, only Chhotu the forest buffalo is of pure breed, the rest are hybrids. They cannot be reproduced as the authority’s rules do not allow this.

After the objection of the Zoo Authority, the forest department, which had the mentality of keeping wild animals hostage for life, suddenly woke up with compassion for animals. From August 10, 2023, giving food supplements (porridge, maize, vitamin supplements) to the hybrid buffaloes kept in the enclosure at Udanti Sitanadi was stopped. 21 days after stopping the food, the Deputy Director wrote a letter to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) that according to the Indian Constitution, it is the duty of every citizen to be compassionate towards all living beings and protect the natural environment. The Deputy Director wrote that according to the Constitution, it is also the duty of the state to protect and improve the environment and to protect all the forests and wildlife of the country. Citing the objection of the Zoo Authority, the Deputy Director wrote that it would be appropriate to release all the hybrid forest buffaloes to roam freely.
