On Saturday, December 10, 2023, severe storms and tornadoes swept across Tennessee, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. At least six people were killed, and tens of thousands of residents were left without power.
The storms were particularly destructive in Montgomery County, where a tornado touched down near the city of Clarksville. The tornado caused extensive damage to homes and businesses, and emergency services were overwhelmed with calls for help.
“This is a sad day for our community,” said Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden. “We are praying for those who are injured, lost loved ones, and lost their homes.”
In addition to the damage in Montgomery County, there were also reports of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in other parts of the state, including Nashville and Dresden.
The storms knocked down trees and power lines, and caused widespread power outages. As of Sunday morning, December 11th, more than 80,000 people were still without power.
Emergency crews are working around the clock to restore power and assess the damage. The Red Cross has set up shelters for those who have been displaced from their homes.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has also been activated to assist with the recovery effort.
