Patna: On Monday, the Bihar government released data from a caste-based survey that indicates that 36 per cent of the state’s population are from Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), 27.1 per cent are from Backward Classes (BCs), 19.7 per cent are from Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 1.7 per cent are from Scheduled Tribes (STs).

The survey was conducted to collect data on the socio-economic conditions of different caste groups in the state. The data will be used to develop targeted policies and programs for the upliftment of disadvantaged groups. Release of this data comes as the Supreme Court paves way for the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s controversial caste-based headcount after hearing petitions challenging a Patna High Court August judgement.

The data shows that EBCs are the largest group in the state, followed by BCs, SCs, and STs. EBCs are also the most disadvantaged group in the state, with a lower literacy rate, higher poverty rate, and lower access to basic amenities than other caste groups.

The data also shows that there is a significant gap in the socio-economic status of different caste groups in the state. For example, the literacy rate among SCs is only 62.7 per cent, compared to 82.2 per cent for the general population. The poverty rate among SCs is also higher than the general population, at 35.2 per cent compared to 27.2 per cent.

The caste-based survey data is a valuable tool for the Bihar government to develop targeted policies and programs for the upliftment of disadvantaged groups. The data can also be used to monitor the progress of existing programs and to identify areas where further interventions are needed.

The release of the caste-based survey data has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have welcomed the data, saying that it will help to ensure that government resources are allocated fairly to all caste groups. Others have criticized the survey, saying that it is divisive and that it will reinforce caste stereotypes.

Despite the criticism, the caste-based survey data is a valuable tool for the Bihar government to develop policies and programs that will help to reduce inequality and promote social justice.
