Raipur: Chhattisgarh on Sunday witnessed the highest single day spike in coronavirus cases with 576 additions, taking the aggregate in the state to 15,621, while 142 succumbed to the virus, the health department said. 

There are 5,244 active cases  whereas the 189 discharges on Sunday took the total discharges to 10,235, the department said in the bulletin.

Of the fresh cases reported on Sunday, 246 were from Raipur, which is worst-hit by the pandemic district in the state, followed by 98 from Durg, 51 from Rajnandgaon, 42 from Bilaspur, 36 each from Raigarh and Balod, 16 from Surguja, 11 from Jashpur, 8 from Mahasamund, 6 from Kabirdham, five each from Sukma and Dantewad, 3 from Balodabazar districts, he said.

The capital Raipur accounted for 5,436 infections, followed by 1,480 in Durg, 1186 in Rajnandgaon, 1027 in Bilaspur, and 610 in Raigarh among other districts. Raipur continued to record highest number of deaths. The city has seen 75 deaths so far including 5 on Sunday.

Notably, Most of those who died were suffering from Severe Acute Respiratory Illness and Influenza Like illness or co-morbidity. With 8 more fatalities, the COVID-19 death toll rose to 142.

As many as 5,330 tests were conducted on Sunday taking the cumulative total to 4.19 lakh, the department said.
