Imphal: People around the globe including some of the popular Indian faces criticized the 26-second video that went viral of two women being disrobed and brutalized by a mob in Manipur. While it stoked massive outrage, people urged the prime minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu for President’s rule in the northeastern state.

Today AAP MP Raghav Chadha gave a Suspension of Business Notice under RUle 267 in Rajya Sabha to discuss the breakdown of law and order in Manipur.

Manipur Police arrested four accused in connection with the viral video. Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced the same in a press conference. “My hearts go out to the two women who were subjected to a deeply disrespectful and inhumane act, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday”, read a part of his Tweet.

The chief minister ensured a thorough investigation and the death penalty for the accused. Seventy-seven days! That’s how long it took the government to get to know the brutal sexual assault of the two Kiku tribal women. The barbaric incident happened on May 4 when the ethnic clashes broke out in the state and the FIR was registered in June revealing that the family of five had fled to the forest to escape armed mob. The mob gang-rapped one of the women and killed her 19-year-old brother for trying to intervene. It took over a month for the FIR to be transferred to the relevant police station since the victims had fled their homes and had approached police in another district.

Another case of police negligence and unresponsive behavior has been highlighted when in village chief Thangboi Vaiphei said that when the village came under attack, the victims were forced to take shelter in the jungles and treated like animals. In total, there have been over 6000 FIRs filed since the violence broke out in the state. Chief Minister’s resignation and President’s rule might help to restore peace in the state, but justice can help thousands of affected get back to their life.
