INSTABUL: A 35-year-old man was rescued from under the rubble of a collapsed building in southern Turkey’s Hatay province 149 hours after the powerful earthquake struck the region, Turkish state news agency reported. The death toll from two massive earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria climbed above 29,000, as rescuers continued to dig through rubble for survivors and victims.
According to UN chief Martin Griffiths who arrived in Turkey’s southern city of Kahramanmaras, the epicentre of the first 7.8-magnitude tremor that upturned millions of lives in the pre-dawn hours of Monday said, ” the death toll from a massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria will “double or more” from its current level of 28,000. “
Meanwhile, the seventh aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) carrying relief assistance for earthquake victims landed in Adana on Sunday under ‘Operation Dost’.
The IAF C 17 Globemaster landed with 13 tonnes of medical equipment and other assistance for Turkey and 24 tonnes of assistance for Syrian quake-hit victims. About 21 tonnes of relief material was sent by the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) to the earthquake-affected Turkey and Syria from the 8th Battalion NDRF.
