NARAYNPUR: The CG police detained 5 in connection to the protests in Narayanpur that eventually led to the vandalism of the Church on Monday. Amongst those arrested include a BJP district head, said, officials.

The arrests have been sought under sections 153 (a) (Promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion), 295 (Injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 147( punishment for rioting), 148 (armed with a deadly weapon) 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of an offense committed in prosecution of common object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). 

The accused have been identified as Ladhakshya Roopsaye, Ankit Nandi, Atul Netaam, and Domed Yadav. The police produced them before the magistrate demanding their custody for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the opposition has set up a six-member fact-finding team to probe the matter. The committee comprises former minister and MLA Nankiram Kanwar, MLA Shivram Sharma, Kanker MP Mohan Mandavi, Rajnandangaon MP Santosh Pandey, BJP state general secretary, and former Minister Kedar Kashyap and former Minister Mahesh Gagda. The committee has been instructed to visit the site and submit a detailed report on the incident.

A senior police officer was injured while his team tried to control the protests that broke out in Narayanpur on Monday. The tribals protest against rampant conversions, following which clashes took place between the tribal groups and Christian tribals.
