New Delhi: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has been sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Lalit at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He is expected to have a tenure of 74 days as he retires on November 8.

Speaking at a farewell organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association of Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice Lalit laid out his priorities. He said, “he will strive hard to make the process of listing cases as simple as transparent as possible”.

Justice Lalit also said that there will be a permanent five-judge bench in the Supreme Court, which is constitutionally tasked to interpret the law and decide important constitutional questions.

Earlier on Friday, NV Ramana retired from the post of CJI. He expressed Justice Lalit as his successor and expressed his confidence with his long and rich experience in the bar and bench.
