The Ranji Trophy which returned after a hiatus of two years saw another stunning performance on Day 2. Bihar’s Sakibul Gani rewrote history with his triple century on FC debut. This feat of his came on Day 2 when Bihar and Mizoram locked horns in Kolkata, at the Jadavpur University Campus 2nd Ground.
At a strike rate of 84.20, the debutant scored 342 runs off just 405 balls with the help of 56 fours and 2 sixes. Gani put on a 538-run stand with partner Babul Kumar who also scored a double century piled up the misery for Mizoram after Gani was dismissed.
During the match against Mizoram, the batter came at a time when Bihar was reeling at 71/3, having lost their top-order players early in the innings. However, Gani, alongside Babul Kumar (currently unbeaten after slamming a double-ton) forged an incredible 538-run stand for the fourth wicket.
The 22-year-old Gani, who hails from Motihari, had previously played 14 List A matches, scoring 377 runs, including a ton and 11 T20Is, scoring 192 runs, with a fifty for Bihar.
The Ranji Trophy is being held in two phases this year. The first part which commenced on February 17th would commence on March 15th. The First-Class Championship this year is split by the IPL. The second season would run from May 30th to June 26th. The Ranji Trophy this season would see 64 matches being played across 62 days.
