New Delhi: The bail of the ministers’ son accused of killing protesting farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri has been challenged in the Supreme Court. It claims the possibility of tampering of evidence and threats to witness paved a path to the grant. “Bail relies on reasoning-based presumptions and guesswork, they said.” “The accused roaming scot-free raises possibility of evidence tampering and threats to witnesses, farmers and victims’ families,” said the petitioners, demanding cancellation of Ashish Mishra’s bail.
The petition is filed by Advocates Shiv Kumar Tripathi and CS Panda, who also demand a status report by the SIT to be filed before the apex court. Issue directions to the UP govt and the Centre to provide compensation to victim families, the plea further read.
Ashish Mishra son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra was granted bail by Allahabad HC a week ago, where he was instructed to give in 2 sureties worth Rs 3 lakh each. He was arrested in October three days after the incident when the SC intervened. The apex court had ordered an enquiry after the police and administration were accused of delaying the process. Mishra was charged for mowing down four farmers and a journalist on October 4th at Lakhimpur Kheri.
