New Delhi: The Supreme Court will no longer hear the issue of OBC reservation in the local body elections of Madhya Pradesh. During this, the Supreme Court said that since the ordinance has expired and the elections have been cancelled, this petition has become ineffective. Whenever the Election Commission conducts local elections, it should follow the triple test given by the Supreme Court before giving reservations.
In fact, in the last hearing, the Supreme Court had said that the hearing of the Madhya Pradesh case will be held along with the case of OBC reservation in Maharashtra. During the hearing of the case, the court had asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to issue advisory to all the states regarding OBC reservation. Tushar Mehta said that the advisory made regarding the OBC reservation has been sent to all the states.
Local body elections in Madhya Pradesh have been cancelled after the Supreme Court’s decision to cancel the OBC reservation. In fact, the OBC reservation was cancelled by the Supreme Court in the local body elections to be held in Madhya Pradesh on December 17th, 2021. The court had said that the elections should be conducted considering the seats reserved for OBCs as general seats.
