New Delhi: India recorded 90,928 fresh infections in the past 24 hours. The recovery rate at 97.81 per cent accounted for 19,206 recuperations in the last 24 hours taking the total recoveries to 3,43,41,009. The daily positivity rate stood at 6.43 per cent.

The number of active cases stood at 2,85,401 accounting for 0.81 per cent of the total number of cases. The active cases reported a rise of 71,397 in the last 24 hours. However, the mortality rate recorded at 1.38 per cent reported a spike in deaths recording 325 fatalities, taking the cumulative death toll to 4,82,876.

The fastspreading Omicron variant has spread to 26 states in India. Maharashtra reports 797 cases, leading the list followed by Delhi 465, Rajasthan 236, Kerala 234, Karnataka 226, Gujarat 204 and Tamil Nadu 121. The recent surge took the Omicron tally to 2,630, according to Union health ministry data. The health ministry recorded the first death in India due to Omicron infection in a geriatric double vaccinated individual from Rajasthan.

The centre on Wednesday underscored the country’s R naught value that indicates the spread of the infection is 2.69, higher than the 1.69 recorded during the peak of the pandemic’s second wave.

As per the statistics reported to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, so far 148.67 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the country including 91.25  lakh doses given in the last 24 hours.
