New Delhi: Farmer unions protesting the Centre’s new farm regulations have chosen to march to Parliament on November 29, just one year after their one-year demonstration at the Delhi border. The United Kisan Morcha’s nine-member committee, which represents farmers’ unions, made the decision today.
Farmers from the Ghazipur and Tikri border areas will drive their tractors to Parliament House on November 29. They’ve stated that they’ll stage a sit-in protest wherever they’re halted. They had warned that if the government did not repeal the unpopular farm legislation by November 26, they would escalate their protest. Asked how long the protest will continue, he said “If governments can run for 5 years, the protest can also go on for 5 years”.
During their last meeting on January 22, he told reporters that they had given the government time until November 26 to respond. They held their last protest near parliament in July, during the monsoon session. The police had given permission, but had stressed that no marching would be allowed.
Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait had tweeted on November 1, “The central government has time till November 26, after that from November 27, farmers will reach the border at the protest sites around Delhi by tractors from villages and strengthen the protest site with solid fortifications.”
