August 29 is marked as national sports day and what an epic day it has been this year! Indian Paralympians have managed to brag 3 medals on this day alone, at the Tokyo Paralympics event. While Bhavinaben Patel and Nishad Kumar have won silver medals at para table tennis and para high jump events respectively, discus thrower Vinod Kumar has managed to brag a bronze medal for the country.
Vinod Kumar has also created history with his throw with a new Asian record of 19.91 m in the men’s F52 event in the Paralympics game. Union sports minister Anurag Thakur congratulated him and tweeted, “This is turning out to be an epic National Sports Day ! #IND has won it’s 3rd Medal at #Tokyo2020 #Paralympics . #VinodKumar delivered a winning throw !Well done & heartiest congratulations!!! Third place medal in Discus Throw F-52 Final event. New Asian Record at 19.91m”.
Earlier on the day, bhavina Patel won a silver medal by defeating her Chinese opponent in the women’s singles table tennis class 4 match. Following her, Nishad Kumar also won a silver medal later in the day at the men’s T47 high jump event. The entire ministerial fraternity took to their social media handles to congratulate the medal winners.
The Bollywood celebrities also wished the medal winners with congratulatory messages apart from millions of other people who poured in their wishes for these para-athletes. PM Modi also talked with Bhavina about bringing home the first medal at the Tokyo Paralympics game. Turns out this year’s Indian contingent at the Paralympics is all fierce and firing to bring home more medals.
