Paralympics: Bahvinaben Patel Reaches Table Tennis Quarter Finals; Powerlfiter Sakina Khatun Finishes Fifth
Bhavinaben Patel continued to impress she became the first Indian Table Tennis player to reach the quarter-finals stage at the Paralympics. Bhavinaben cruised past Joyce de Oliveira of Brazil at 3-0 in the women’s single Class 4 event to reach last 8 stage at the Tokyo Paralympics on Friday. Later during the day she would compete against World No 2 Borislava Peric Rankovic of Serbia for the quarter final test.
In the meanwhile, Indian athlete Sakina Khatun finished 5th in women’s 50 kg powerlifting finals in the ongoing Paralympics on Friday. Sakina, who clinched bronze in the Commonwealth Games 2014, had a decent start as she lifted 90 kgs in her first attempt and was ranked ahead of Lidiia Soloviova of Ukraine. The paralympic powerlifter failed to lift 93 kgs in her second round and triumphed in her third attempt which moved her to the fifth spot. However, Sakina failed to reach the set target. As a result, the para-powerlifter missed out on a medal.
China’s powerlifter Hu Dandan struck gold as she lifted 120 kgs while Egypt Rehab Ahmed clinched silver lifting 117 kgs. Bronze was bagged by Olivia Broome of Great Britain.
Later in the day, Indian para-powerlifter Jaideep Kumar would compete for men’s 65 kg category.
