New Delhi: Addressing a news briefing over the current situation of the pandemic, AIIMS Chief Dr Randeep Guleria has predicted the third wave of COVID-19 is “inevitable” in India and may even hit the country within the next six to eight weeks.
Speaking to the reporters he said, ” As we have started unlocking, there is again a lack of Covid-appropriate behaviour. We don’t seem to have learnt from what happened between the first and the second wave. Again, crowds are building up… people are gathering. It will take some time for the number of cases to rise at the national level. A third wave is inevitable and it could hit the country within the next six to eight weeks… maybe a little longer.”
Emphasizing on ways to prevent resurgence he stated that the COVID- appropriate behaviour acts as a determinant of the third wave. Guleria added that vaccination remains the core weapon against the virus and increasing the gap between the two doses of the Covishield vaccine “may not be a bad approach” to provide more people with protection.
Referring to the onset of the third wave in the UK, attributed to Delta Variant ” the virus is still mutating, we need to be careful”, said Guleria.
On Friday, the Delhi High Court took Suo motu cognisance of the violations of health protocols in Delhi’s market spaces and observed that such contraventions will expedite the third wave of the coronavirus.
The Bench cited the photographs sent by a healthcare worker at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), depicting street vendors flouting COVID protocols in markets.
